Questions
How many phonemes are in a word?
Type one English word. The phoneme counter returns the likely number of sounds and shows each sound segment, so you can see how the count was reached.
Is the number of letters the same as the number of phonemes?
No. Phonemes are sounds, not letters. "Ship" has 4 letters but 3 phonemes (/ʃ/ /ɪ/ /p/), because "sh" makes one sound. "Night" has 5 letters and 3 phonemes (/n/ /aɪ/ /t/).
Can I see the IPA transcription?
Yes. Turn on the transcription option to get an IPA transcription with the count.
Does the dialect change the count?
It can. Choose US, UK or Australian English. "Car" usually has 3 phonemes in US English (/k/ /ɑ/ /r/) and 2 in UK and Australian English (/k/ /ɑː/). The result notes alternate pronunciations instead of treating one count as universal.
How much does it cost?
Each run is priced before you start, and new accounts get free credits to try it.
Choose a cloud run and skip the setup — Omo handles the service keys and sends back the finished result.
